This Westie is given to a business that has been opens for less than two years in the Greater Westlake area. They should have also demonstrated one or more of the following: Growth and Stability, Commitment to Quality, Creative or Unique Solutions to Challenges, Entrepreneurial Spirit, and/or an Overall Contribution to The Greater Westlake Community.
Finalist: All Star Burger
We regret to inform you that All Star Burger is no longer a candidate for New Business of the Year. The owners have decided to close their Westlake Davenport Village location, effective immediately.
All Star Burger has been a leader in our community since they opened their doors in February 2018. The Westlake Chamber of Commerce supports all of our businesses in the Westlake community and it is always very difficult to see one of our valued members close their doors. All Star Burger's Bee Cave Galleria restaurant, which is their flagship location, is going strong and serving that "ALLSTAR SPIRIT" that they are known for.
All Star Burger -- We love your motto of "We Live Here, We Trade Here, We Give Here” and look forward to supporting your Bee Cave Galleria location!
Here's what made All Star Burger Westlake such a great finalist for the New Business of the Year category:
In February 2018, ALL STAR BURGER opened in Westlake’s Davenport Village. We’re a local, family-owned business; and, even buy our food ingredients locally whenever possible because we believe it really does make a difference, plus it supports our neighbors.
Since opening in Westlake, ALL STAR BURGER has made participation in the community a top priority. We’ve worked hard to be a supportive member of the Westlake Community; and in addition to being a member of the Westlake Chamber, we’ve also heavily partnered with the Eanes Education Foundation and other Westlake-based non-profit organizations.
We take pride in financially supporting all the charities and organizations that come to us for help; and, we’re especially proud of one of our ALL STAR STUDENT AWARDS PROGRAM. We’ve partnered with the Eanes elementary schools to provide customized academic and behavioral awards that recognize and reward every student’s individual accomplishments; and, we donate enough awards and gift cards to ensure that every child in the Eanes school district can earn one of each. Along with their awards, each honored student is given a Free Kid’s Meal and Shake at ALL STAR BURGER; and, we always do our best to make each child feel very special when they redeem their gift cards.
Community involvement is core to our business; and, our primary slogan says it all - "We Live Here, We Trade Here, We Give Here.”
Finalist: Birds Barbershop
In 2006, Michael Portman and Jayson Rapaport – childhood friends from Laredo, Texas – found themselves living in Austin with nowhere to get an affordable, high-quality haircut. Together they created a salon for all by taking out all the fuss and adding complimentary Independence beer, vintage arcade games and a curated soundtrack to add to the experience.
With such a family-focused community perfect for Birds’ clientele, Portman and Rapaport searched for years for the ideal location in the Westlake area. In January 2018 they found the place, fortunate to open a spot in the same complex as neighborhood favorite Texas Honey Ham.
For the company’s West Lake Hills location, the team made the shop into a bright ode to Westlake pride — think re-purposed high school gym flooring as building material, a 100-foot “recess daydream” mural featuring a custom Birds Pac-Man mural, and an original exterior sign resurrected as interior lighting — transforming the former Subway space into a fun destination where the whole family can walk in for high-quality, affordable.
Birds thinks local when it comes to giving back. Since joining the Westlake area, the company has participated in the Chamber of Commerce’s annual “Westlake Hills July 4th Parade” and “Wonderfest,” by offering free services and prizes, as well as financially sponsoring the Westlake High School football, soccer and band programs, including perks for players. Portman’s sons attend school in Westlake and play in Western Hills Little League, which Birds has sponsored (and sometimes coached) for years. Since opening, “Birds on Bee Cave" has also held fundraisers for the Literacy First early reading charity program, hosted an Earth Day “Birds & The Bees” community event and donated free cuts and gift baskets to support silent auction fundraisers in the area.
Finalist: Junkluggers of Austin
The Junkluggers of Austin is a franchise started in September of 2017 by Westlake resident, Laura Chavez. Since it’s opening, the Austin team has produced the second fastest start in franchise history, despite heavy initial start-up costs including specially designed dump trucks. The Junkluggers of Austin is also the first woman-led organization in the history of the franchise.
Garbage collection is not new. People have been filling up landfills for decades. As Austin is seeking to become landfill free by 2040, Laura saw a unique opportunity to engage the Westlake and larger Austin MSA by focusing on the interests of the community. The uniqueness of The Junkluggers begins after the collection. Items are collected and sorted for proper disposition by a separate crew to ensure that items are maximized for donations and recyclable items. Using this method, over 70% of items destined for the landfill are given a new life. The Junkluggers also plans on partnering very closely with a recycling organization in 2019 to increase their recycling capabilities.
Laura’s model is unique in that the effort required to sort and deliver donate-able items increases her cost of doing business. However, by creating avenues to benefit others while impacting our local environment, Laura believes that a strong brand will drive long-term sustainability.
Laura is an active member of the Westlake Chamber of Commerce, and particularly active on the Humanitarian Committee where she has donated The Junkluggers’ trucks, time, and labor to benefit Mobile, Loaves and Fishes. The Junkluggers also work tirelessly with pickup and delivery services for local residents who donate items to local charities. Non-profits include Habitat for Humanity, Austin Child Guidance Center and Carrying Hope.
