The annual Westies, honoring the best and brightest of the Westlake area, were awarded Friday, February 3rd at the Hotel Granduca.  This year’s honorees were:
2016 Citizen of the Year: Amy King

Amy has a heart for the community and giving back. For over 10 years, Amy has helped grant wishes to children in Central and South Texas facing life threatening illness through the Make A Wish Foundation. In 2014, Amy was recognized with the Make-A-Wish Trooper Award for Outstanding Mission Support and is now a member of the Make-A-Wish Austin Regional Board of Trustees. Additionally, Amy is an active member of the Junior League of Austin. She is the Volunteer Chair for BIG Love Cancer Care, and has also served the Ronald McDonald House Charities as a Family Room volunteer at Seton and Dell Children’s Hospital.  Amy is employed at Bazaarvoice, a company that fully supports and encourages their employees in giving back to the community.
2016 Young Citizen of the Year: Jamie Malone.

Jamie is a senior at St. Michael’s Academy. She is involved with student government, cheerleading and the National Honor Society.  She has been volunteering for all four years at St. Michael’s. The many volunteering activities include a sports camp counselor at St. Ignatius Martyr Catholic School, and a cheerleading coach at St. Gabriel’s Catholic School. At St. Michael’s she volunteers with a tutoring program, a freshman mentoring program, Senior Leadership Team, drama club, photography club, Spanish club, and prom committee. She is also a student ambassador, the varsity cheer captain and president of the National Honor Society.
2016 Educator of the Year: Karen Linder 
2016 marks Karen’s 20th year with EISD where she is currently a kindergarten teacher at Forest Trail Elementary. She believes students are never too young to make the world a better place. Classroom community service projects include adopting a family in need during the holidays, donations to Austin’s Safe Place, Central Texas Food Bank, local animal shelters, as well as books to children’s groups, and clothing to needy Austin citizens. Last year, Forest Trail raised $20,000 to fund a micro house at Communities First.  Her relationship with students has come full circle as former students pop into her classroom remember all things ‘Lindergarten.’ Her desire to educate and impact students in a positive way is ongoing.
2016 Non-Profit of the Year: POP-UP BIRTHDAY 

Pop-up Birthday serves the foster children of Region 7 which includes 30 counties in central Texas. Through partnerships with Child Protective Services (CPS), CASA, UpBring, Pathfinders, Safe Austin, and Pathways Youth & Family Services, they fulfill requests for personalized birthday experiences. Many times, this is the first time a child has ever had a birthday party. Pop-Up Birthday is run by volunteers and interns. They reside on the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Westlake and many of their volunteers and donors are members of the Westlake community.

2016 First Responder of the Year: Westlake Fire Department

The fire department protects a community of approximately 15,000 citizens and covers a district of approximately 15 square miles. Travis County Emergency Services District No. 9’s Core Principals are: protect the community from fire and other disasters, provide the best emergency medical services possible for the sick and injured, provide safety to the community and to ourselves so that we can fulfill our mission, be accountable to our community for providing high quality emergency services, including prevention, response and public education.  The commitment made by fire and EMS personnel is extraordinary. Each one leaves their families for a third of the year to provide the very best emergency service they can provide. They miss holidays and some weekends, they have meals and sleep interrupted to run calls all in the name of the Westlake Fire Department.

2016 New Business of the Year: Smoothie King

Smoothie King opened in the Westlake area on March 31, 2016.  Since opening, they’ve been involved in the Hill Country Middle School fitness festival, the Eanes Education Foundation, Project Graduation, Cedar Creek PTO, and Eanes Elementary PTO. They care about the well-being and health of the kids in the community. They’ve donated hundreds of smoothies to Teacher Appreciation events and they volunteer at Mobile Loaves & Fishes through Lake Hills Church.

2016 Business of the Year: Trianon coffee 

Trianon celebrated their 30th year in the community. During the last three years, they have continued the long tradition of supporting programs and activities in the Eanes School District as well as supporting local charities. They serve the entire community by providing their conference room free-of-charge to groups and businesses that need a quiet, clean, and pleasant place for meetings and classes. More than 25 groups and individuals reserve the room weekly. They support other local merchants by purchasing locally produced goods and services.
