Golf is good for business.

The 15th Annual Westlake Golf Classic is only a few short weeks away.  Tee time is noon on Monday, Oct. 2nd at Falconhead Golf Club.  It is a four-person scramble and all funds raised provide the Chamber with resources for programs such as professional development workshops, speakers, and community outreach programs.

The Westlake Chamber is, at its heart, an organization representing Westlake area businesses and golf is a great business tool.   According to a PGA.com, executives who play golf make 17% more than those who don’t.   They also said an estimated 90% of Fortune 500 CEO’s play golf and that 54% of business professionals see golf as the perfect networking tool as opposed to only 8% who selected football.

And it’s not just a networking tool, it’s a way to learn things about another person you wouldn’t learn in a traditional business setting.   Do they break rules or are they a rule follower?  How do they handle their emotions when they hit a bad shot?  Are they patient or are they looking for the quick reward?  A round of golf also gives you hours of quality face time with someone, whether that be a potential client or a co-worker.   You can use that time to bond, learn things about them or learn things about yourself.
If you haven’t played in the Westlake Golf Classic, join us this year.  Bring your clients and colleagues.  Registration information can be found on our website.

The Chamber is also pleased to announce the launch of Leadership Westlake.  The purpose of the program is to develop a pool of qualified, highly motivated individuals who are interested in expanding their leadership skills, deepening their sense of civic responsibility, and becoming more involved in their community as a whole and is open to anyone in the Westlake area.

The inaugural program will run January 2018 through May 2018 with future programs running September to May.  After an initial overnight Leadership Retreat there will be five full day sessions each on the 4th Thursday of the month.

One day will focus on the Local Economy with participants visiting local businesses to meet with the leaders that created successful organizations, and learn the “secrets of their success”.  Another day’s program will focus on Education with participants meeting leaders of the education community in Eanes School district, private schools, and non-traditional schools to understand local education issues.

Non-profit leaders will speak about the issues that face those organizations and learn about the roles community leaders play in their success.  Later, participants will meet with Government Officials at the City, County, and State level to understand more about issues facing local entities today.  The last program will feature leaders in Medical practices and Emergency services organizations.

Applications for the inaugural class are now being accepted and approved participants will be notified on Oct. 15th.  The retreat kicks off on January 18th and the first full day of programming will be January 25, 2018.
